The Hohe-Wand-Wiese is, next to the Dollwiese in Hietzing , one of the two ski slopes in Vienna . It is located in the municipality of Penzing , cadastral community Hadersdorf , property no. 225, locality Vorderhainbach , and has a drag lift , a baby drag lift (conveyor belt), a snowmaking system and floodlighting . With its maximum gradient of 25%, it can be classified as a blue slope .

The first parallel slalom in the history of skiing was held on the Hohe-Wand-Wiese in 1967 . In 1986 the Alpine Ski World Cup made a guest appearance here for a race .

history

Even before skiing became a popular sport, the highest point on the Hohe Wand (today: beyond the Mostalm shelter to the Franz-Karl-Fernsicht at 488 m) was a popular destination for excursions because of its wonderful foresight. A hike there is described in a hiking guide from the Biedermeier period , the work Vienna's Environs for Twenty Hours Around by Adolf Schmidl from 1835:

This path [via Hainbach] leads to the high wall. [...]
You step out of the forest onto the edge of the beautiful, so-called baker's meadow, which descends into a lush green valley. Dark forest mountains all around, from which individual fresh mats peek out - there is no trace of Vienna to be seen - beyond the present height you can see the great Danube bridge, the Marchfeld plain , and in the distance the Hainburger Berg , the Thebner Kogel and the beginnings of the little Carpathians . But if you turn to the right, what a picture! The forest mountains form a deep saddle here and over this you can see the Austro-Styrian Alps , as if in a natural frame !

The Hohe-Wand-Wiese as a ski meadow was opened on March 1, 1966 under Mayor Bruno Marek .

The parallel slalom of February 21, 1967 was followed by three more such competitions, on January 30, 1968, January 27, 1969 and January 6, 1986. The latter was held as part of the FIS Ski World Cup and was also the first floodlit slalom. In the final, the Italian Ivano Edalini prevailed against the German Markus Wasmeier in front of 10,000 spectators .

The snow required for the slope preparation came from a snow cannon on site, additional quantities were produced in a climatic chamber of the Vienna Arsenal ( Austrian Research and Testing Center Arsenal , now: Arsenal Research ) and transported by truck.

Since 2006 there has been  a summer toboggan run on the Hohe-Wand-Wiese at Mauerbachstraße 174-184 .

The T-bar lift has been closed in winter since the 2016/17 season. Instead, a 40 meter long conveyor belt is in use. In the lower area there are Dryslope slide mats that allow skiing even without snow. If the weather permits, this area can also be covered with snow. According to the new lessee, winter use of the entire slope is no longer economically viable due to global warming .
