Wolfgang Hörl (born October 30, 1983 in Saalfelden ) is a former Austrian ski racer . He was a member of the A-team of the Austrian Ski Association and specialized in the slalom discipline.

biography

Hörl attended the alpine branch of the secondary school in Zell am See and from 1998 to 2002 the ski trade school in Schladming . After reaching the age limit, Hörl took part in FIS races from the 1998/1999 season. At the end of the next winter he suffered a cruciate ligament rupture on the descent of the Austrian championships in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee . The second cruciate ligament tear followed in January 2001 in an FIS slalom at Hochkar . Increasingly, he concentrated exclusively on the technical disciplines of slalom and giant slalom. In the 2001/2002 season, Hörl first achieved the first podium places in FIS races before he became Austrian youth champion in slalom in his youth class II at the beginning of February. In the same month he made his first starts in the European Cup , which was followed by the first victories in FIS races. He was nominated for the Junior World Championship in Sella Nevea in 2002, where he only started in slalom and was eliminated in the first round. His inclusion in the squad of the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV) was followed by participation in the 2003 Junior World Championship in Hautes-Alpes . He was seventh in the giant slalom, but retired again in the slalom. At the end of 2003, Hörl fell ill with Pfeiffer's glandular fever , whereupon he failed to perform as required the following winter and in 2004 lost his place in the ÖSV squad.

After good placements in FIS races and in the European Cup, Hörl returned to the ÖSV squad in 2006. At the end of the 2006/2007 season he first achieved his first podium in the European Cup with third place in the giant slalom in Hermagor and on March 15, 2007 his first victory in the slalom of Madesimo / Campodolcino . The then 24-year-old made his debut in the World Cup on January 20, 2008 in the slalom of the Hahnenkamm Races in Kitzbühel , where he immediately won World Cup points with 20th place. Two days later he finished 16th in the night slalom on the Schladminger Planai . At the end of the month, the customs officer was the first Austrian to win the international customs championship for alpine skiers. In 2008 Hörl was promoted to the A-team of the ÖSV, to which he has belonged ever since. In the next few years he was in the top 15 several times in the World Cup, but he has not yet managed to break through to the top of the world. He is also used in the European Cup. In contrast to the European Cup, Hörl only competed in slalom races in the World Cup from the start, but since 2009 he has only competed in this discipline in the European Cup.

The 2008/2009 World Cup season was initially Hörl's most successful. He drove under the fastest 15 in four slaloms and achieved his current best World Cup result with twelfth place on the Ganslernhang in Kitzbühel. In the Slalom World Cup he finished 23rd. In the next two years, top 20 placings were the exception and Hörl fell significantly behind in the Slalom World Cup. Nevertheless, he qualified for the 2011 World Championship in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , where he was eliminated after finishing 18th in the first run in the second run. In the 2011/2012 season , Hörl's results improved again. He initially equaled his previous best result in the World Cup with twelfth place in the opening slalom in Beaver Creek and on January 22nd, 2012, with the fastest time in the second round, he took eighth place in Kitzbühel, with which he achieved a top 10 result in the World Cup for the first time. He finished the Slalom World Cup in 27th place.

In the 2012/2013 season went Hörl ninth of the slalom in Val d'Isere and the City Events from Moscow two more times in World Cup races in the top ten.

On June 3, 2016, the 33-year-old announced his retirement from active ski racing.
