Robert C. De Large

Robert Carlos De Large (born March 15, 1842 in Aiken , Aiken County , South Carolina , †  February 14, 1874 in Charleston , South Carolina) was an American politician . Between 1871 and 1873 he represented the state of South Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Robert De Large graduated from Wood High School and then worked in agriculture. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1868 he was a delegate to a meeting to revise the South Carolina Constitution. From 1868 to 1870 he was a member of the State House of Representatives . He was also one of the state commissioners for debt repayment and also state commissioner for the administration of public land.

In 1870 De Large was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the Second Constituency of South Carolina . There he took over from Christopher C. Bowen on March 4, 1871 . However, the latter filed an objection to the outcome of the election. Robert De Large exercised his mandate in Congress until the decision on the electoral appeal . It was not until January 24, 1873, a few weeks before the end of the legislative period on March 3, that Bowen's objection was granted and the seat of parliament declared vacant. On March 4, 1873, Alonzo J. Ransier, elected in 1872, took over this mandate.

After serving in the House of Representatives, De Large was still a member of Charleston City Council. He died on February 14, 1874.
