Alexander S. Wallace
Alexander Stuart Wallace (born December 30, 1810 in York , York County , South Carolina , † June 27, 1893 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1870 and 1877 he represented the state of South Carolina in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Alexander Wallace received limited schooling. Then he worked as a planter in his home country. In addition, he began a political career. Between 1852 and 1866 he was three times a member of the House of Representatives from South Carolina . When the Civil War ended , Wallace became a member of the Republican Party .
In the congressional elections of 1868 there was an election challenge by Wallace, who appealed against the outcome of the election in favor of William Dunlap Simpson . The seat in the House of Representatives remained vacant until the decision on May 27, 1870. On that day, Alexander Wallace was declared the election winner. After three re-elections in 1870, 1872 and 1874 he was able to represent the fourth constituency of South Carolina in Congress until March 3, 1877 . Between 1871 and 1873 he was chairman of the Committee on Claims to the Federal Government from the Revolutionary Period.
In the elections of 1876 Wallace was defeated by the Democrat John H. Evins . By 1969 he would remain the last Republican to represent the fourth district of South Carolina in Congress. After his tenure in the House of Representatives, Wallace worked in agriculture until his death in 1893.
