George Swinton Legare

George Swinton Legaré (born November 11, 1869 in Rockville , Charleston County , South Carolina , † January 31, 1913 in Charleston , South Carolina) was an American politician . Between 1903 and 1913 he represented the state of South Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Soon after his birth, George Legaré moved with his parents to Charleston. There he attended the Porter Military Academy until 1889 . After studying law at the University of South Carolina and Georgetown University in Washington, DC and being admitted to the bar in 1893, he began working in his new profession in Charleston. Between 1893 and 1903 Legaré was also active as a business advisor ( Corporation Counsel ).

Politically, Legaré was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1902 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the first constituency of South Carolina, where he succeeded William Elliott on March 4, 1903 . After he was confirmed in his mandate in the following elections, Legaré could remain in Congress until his death on January 31, 1913 . He was also re-elected in the 1912 elections. That would have allowed him another legislative period until March 3, 1915. His mandate fell to Richard S. Whaley after a by-election .

Legaré was the grandfather of Nancy Stevenson (1928-2001), who was Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina between 1979 and 1983 .
