Arthur Ravenel
Arthur Ravenel Jr. (born March 29, 1927 in Charleston , South Carolina ) is a former American politician . Between 1987 and 1995 he represented the state of South Carolina in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Arthur Ravenel served in the United States Marine Corps between 1945 and 1946 after elementary school . He then studied at the College of Charleston until 1950 . He then worked as a broker and completed contracts ( general contractor ). Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party . Between 1953 and 1958 he was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives ; from 1980 to 1986 he was a member of the State Senate .
In 1986, Ravenel was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of South Carolina , where he succeeded Thomas F. Hartnett on January 3, 1987 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four consecutive terms in Congress until January 3, 1995 . During this time, the 27th amendment to the constitution was passed there. He was considered very conservative and was sometimes noticed by racist remarks. Ravenel is a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans . He advocated the hoisting of the flag of the former Confederate States on the South Carolina State House . During a demonstration for this cause, he referred to the opposing civil rights organization National Association for the Advancement of Colored People as "National Association for Retarded People" ("National Association for the mentally retarded"). He later apologized to the mentally retarded people for comparing them to NAACP members.
In 1994 Ravenel decided not to run again. Instead, he ran unsuccessfully for his party's nomination for the gubernatorial elections in South Carolina. Today he lives in retirement.
