Career

The African American Robert B. Elliott says he was born in Liverpool in 1842. However, this information could not be scientifically verified. What is certain is that he studied law and practiced as a lawyer in South Carolina from 1867. There he was also involved in founding the Republican Party . In 1868 Elliott was a member of an assembly to revise the state constitution. Between 1868 and 1870 he was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives . From 1869 to 1871 he was also the Assistant Adjutant General of the South Carolina National Guard. In this position he worked to set up a special force to fight the Ku Klux Klan .

In 1870 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third electoral district of South Carolina , where he succeeded Solomon L. Hoge on March 4, 1871 . In 1872, Elliott was confirmed. This allowed him to remain in Congress between March 1871 and his resignation on November 1, 1874 . Elliott also fought against political corruption in his state.

Between 1874 and 1876 he was again a member of the House of Representatives from South Carolina. He was also elected President of the House. In 1876, Robert Elliott ran unsuccessfully for the office of Attorney General of South Carolina. With the end of Reconstruction in 1876, Elliott's political career also ended. As an African-American Republican, he had no chance in the conservative-segregationist South Carolina of those days. In 1881 he moved to New Orleans, where he worked as a lawyer until his death on August 9, 1884.
