Eli T. Stackhouse

Eli Thomas Stackhouse (born March 27, 1824 in Little Rock , Marion County , South Carolina , †  June 14, 1892 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1892 he represented the state of South Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Eli Stackhouse attended the public schools in his home country and then worked on his father's farm. In addition, he worked as a teacher himself for a few years before he worked independently in agriculture. During the Civil War he was an officer in the Confederate Army . By the end of the war he had reached the rank of Colonel . At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

In 1863 and from 1865 to 1866 he was a member of the House of Representatives from South Carolina . Stackhouse also became a curator of the Clemson Agricultural and Mechanical College in 1887 . In 1888 he was the first president of the South Carolina Farmers Association. In the congressional election of 1890 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the sixth constituency of South Carolina, where he succeeded George W. Dargan on March 4, 1891 . Eli Stackhouse could not complete his legislative term in Congress, which actually ran until March 3, 1893 , because he died on June 14, 1892. He was buried in his home church, Little Rock. His mandate fell to John L. McLaurin after a by-election .
