Nomophobia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

NOMOPHOBIA ( English NOMOPHOBIA ) is a portmanteau word from English-speaking and one from the UK Post Office coined acronym for " No - Mo bile- Pho ne Pho bia ", literally "No Cellphone fear." Nomophobia is the (separation) fear of being inaccessible for social and business contacts without a mobile phone. The reasons for such inaccessibility can be varied, from loss to damage to an empty battery. Most of those affected are in the 18 to 25 age group. Nomophobia is a side effect of mobile phone addiction .

Symptoms

Typical behaviors can be expressed in fears, depressive moods or nervousness, which are caused by unwanted abstinence. In addition, nomophobia manifests itself, among other things, in the urge to use the mobile phone as well as in stress, sweating, tremors, palpitations or panic in the event of unavailability or a switched off mobile phone. In order to avoid loss of reachability, nomophobics tend not to switch off their mobile phone in the first place, to carry it close by or even to buy a second phone.

Studies

A study in the UK found that around half of all UK cell phone users were affected by nomophobia in 2008 (2008). In 2012, 66 percent of the British were already affected by the fear.

According to a report in Psychology Today (2014), two thirds of the surveyed users slept next to their mobile phone and more than half could not even turn it off. A survey also found that 66 percent of US cell phone users had nomophobia.

An Indian study including 200 college students also showed a frequency of 18.5 percent. In order to be able to measure nomophobia, a randomized experiment was carried out with 163 college students, the aim of which was to measure the level of anxiety after unexpected separation from the mobile phone. With a strongly pronounced usage behavior (compared to moderate and low usage behavior), the dependence on one's own mobile phone could be observed in the form of an intensified fear reaction.

The NOMOPHOBIA despite all previous studies are still not a recognized diagnosis after the ICD-10 or DSM V .
