The Transportation Security Administration ( TSA ; German Transportation Security Administration ) is an American federal authority under the jurisdiction of the Department of Homeland Security , based in Pentagon City , Arlington County , Virginia , serving the public safety in traffic. It was created under the Aviation and Transportation Security Act 2001 and ratified by the 107th Congress . It belonged to the Ministry of Transport until the end of February 2003 . 43,000 people are currently employed here, and their transportation officers have police powers.

The head of the agency is David P. Pekoske. The budget for the 2007 fiscal year was $ 4.751 billion.

The task of the TSA is to maintain public safety on highways, railways of all kinds, ports (partly also abroad) and 450 airports nationwide (the latter to a small extent through private security services as part of a so-called screening partnership program).
