The United States Park Police (USPP) is the oldest federal police agency . They are based in Washington, DC and run under the National Park Service , which in turn belongs to the United States Department of the Interior . The officers are usually armed and uniformed .
The story goes back to 1791 when President George Washington established Park Watchmen for the District of Columbia . The current name has only existed since 1919.
tasks
In all areas of the National Park Service from the large national parks to the mostly small National Historic Sites , the National Park Service exercises police power independently. The enforcement of the hunting ban and other park regulations was the first and original task in the oldest national parks; visitor information and other functions were added later. For this purpose, each location has rangers who are trained as law enforcement officers .
The United States Park Police exercise authority only in the National Park Service areas of Washington, DC, New York City, and San Francisco. In Washington, the National Park Service has a particularly large number of contiguous or nearby areas; responsibilities in New York City and San Francisco have evolved historically.
