The US Coast Guard Investigative Service (CGIS) is a law enforcement agency of the United States Coast Guard (US Coast Guard). The motto is Service, Integrity, Justice (in German: "Service, Integrity and Justice").

Around 230 civil and military special agents work for the agency . 158 Coast Guard Reserve Special Agents also work for the agency. The agents and other (technical and administrative) personnel are distributed across 35 regional offices and the headquarters in Arlington County in the immediate vicinity of the Pentagon.

organization

The CGIS is divided into seven regions ( regional areas ), each of which is managed by a special agent-in-charge (SAC). The federal law United States Code Title 14 Part I Chapter 5 Section 95 created the conditions for the establishment of the association ( constituting instrument ).

The supervisory authority is the command authority of the United States Coast Guard ( Command , CG-2), whereby the CGIS has been excluded from the chain of command. The CGIS is the Assistant Commandant for Intelligence reportable .

tasks and activities

The CGIS investigates cases of actual, suspected or reported criminal activity. The service forces are armed and execute arrest warrants ; they are also authorized to make arrests . Around 230 people work for the authority. The staff consists of civilian employees (GS-1811), active soldiers, reservists ( reserve enlisted ) and warrant officer special agents .

history

The agency's history dates back to 1915 when the Coast Guard's Chief Intelligence Officer was created. From this a separate administrative apparatus with the character of a military police and a military intelligence service ( United States Coast Guard Intelligence ) developed.
