Isaac Holmes

Isaac Holmes (born May 3, 1758 in Charleston , Province of South Carolina , † April 3, 1812 ibid) was an American trader and politician in South Carolina ( Federalist Party ).

Career

Not much information is known about Isaac Holmes. He was a member of the South Carolina General Assembly . During the American Revolutionary War , he served in the Province of South Carolina House of Representatives from 1778 to 1780. After the fall of Charleston in May 1780, he was the British captured, then by ship to St. Augustine ( Florida brought), where he was imprisoned. One of his fellow prisoners was Christopher Gadsden , then Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina. They were exchanged in 1781. After the war, he was elected lieutenant governor of South Carolina, a position he held between February 15, 1791 and December 5, 1791. On September 19, 1791 he received his appointment as a tax collector for Charleston by the Federal Treasury Department . He held this office until his resignation in 1797.

Isaac Holmes was the son of Elizabeth Stobo Stanyarne and Isaac Holmes. He married Elizabeth Legare (1762-1835) on January 5, 1779.
