Andrew Bethea

Andrew Jackson Bethea (born August 17, 1879 in Dillon County , South Carolina , †  December 28, 1945 in Orangeburg , South Carolina) was an American politician . Between 1915 and 1919 he was lieutenant governor of the state of South Carolina.

Career

In 1904, Andrew Bethea, the son of a doctor and planter, graduated from Wake Forest College in North Carolina . After studying law at the University of South Carolina , he was admitted to the bar. He worked in school for a few years and then in the newspaper business. To what extent he practiced as a lawyer is not known. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . Between 1907 and 1911 he was the private secretary of Governor Martin F. Ansel . He then held the office of Commissioner of South Carolina .

In 1914, Bethea was elected lieutenant governor of South Carolina alongside Charles Aurelius Smith . He held this office after a re-election between 1915 and 1919. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . At the same time he was major in the reserve during the First World War . After serving as Lieutenant Governor, Andrew Bethea did not appear politically. He died on December 28, 1945 as a result of a car accident in Orangeburg.
