Thomas Gadsden

Thomas Gadsden ( 1757 - November 4, 1791 ) was an American officer in the Continental Army and a politician in the Province of South Carolina .

Career

Not much information has come down to us about Thomas Gadsden. He was the son of Brigadier General Christopher Gadsden . Thomas served in the First Regiment of South Carolina from December 1776 until the end of the American Revolutionary War . In autumn 1780 he held the rank of captain . After the war he was elected lieutenant governor of South Carolina. He held the position from February 20, 1787 to January 26, 1789. In this capacity he took part in the Convention of South Carolina, where on May 23, 1788 the US Constitutionhas been ratified. Thomas Gadsden died on November 4, 1791. When he died, he still had a large loan of several thousand dollars that his father took over and which he needed much of the 1790s to repay.
