Ransome Judson Williams

Ransome Judson Williams (born January 4, 1892 in Cope , Orangeburg County , South Carolina , †  January 7, 1970 ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) and from 1945 to 1947 governor of the state of South Carolina.

Early years

Ransome Williams attended the Medical College of South Carolina in Charleston . Then he got involved in various areas of business life. Among other things, he was president of the Delta Drug Company in Myrtle Beach and managing director of a life insurance company in Florence . He first appeared politically when he was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives in 1931 . There he remained until 1932. In 1942 he was elected lieutenant governor of South Carolina. After the resignation of Governor Olin D. Johnston he had to take over his office in January 1945.

During his two-year term between January 2, 1945 and January 21, 1947, a pension system was introduced for teachers and other government employees. A new Department of Research, Planning and Development has also been established. During his term of office, the end of the Second World War fell and one of his tasks was the conversion of the economy and administration to the needs of peace. For the elections in 1946, Williams sought re-election, but he could not prevail against Strom Thurmond . After the end of his tenure he was a curator of various schools and universities. Otherwise he went back to his private business. He died in January 1970. Ransome Williams was married to Virginia Allen, with whom he had two children.
