Avon Lake is a city in northeast Lorain County in Ohio , United States . In 2000 the city had 18,145 inhabitants.

Avon Lakes geographic coordinates are 41 ° 30 ′ N , 82 ° 0 ′ W (41.501595, −82.006309). It's about 15 miles west of Cleveland and about two miles north of Interstate 90 / Ohio State Route 2 , which is a quick link into central Cleveland. Two major roads run through Avon Lake, US Highway 6 and Ohio State Route 83 .
According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has an area of 28.8 km² , all of which is land.
history
Avon Lake was first settled around 1812. when the area was still part of Cuyahoga County . In 1822 the area became part of Lorain County. In 1822, today's Avon Lake split off from the then Avon Township to become independent. In 1960 Avon Lake was established as a City. At that time the place had just under ten thousand inhabitants. The tracks of the railway line separate the two cities.
Demographics
At the time of the 2000 United States Census, Avon Lake was inhabited by 18,145 people. The population density was 629.5 people per km ². There were 6937 housing units at an average of 240.5 per km ². The Hoquiam population was 97.31% White , 0.45% Black or African American , 0.16% Native American , 0.96% Asian , 0.04% Pacific Islander , 0.25% said other races belong to and 0.83% named two or more races. 1.25% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.
The residents of Avon Lakes distributed to 6711 households out of which 38.4% were living in children under 18 years of age. 66.8% of households were married, 7.1% had a female head of household without a husband, and 23.5% were not families. 20.3% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 9.0% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.70 and the average family size was 3.14.
The urban population was divided into 28.9% minors, 5.0% 18–24 year olds, 29.5% 25–44 year olds, 25.0% 45–64 year olds and 11.6% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 women there were 95.5 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 89.5 men.

Avon Lake is a registered parish governed by a seven-member city council. Of these, one in each of the four wards and three others are generally chosen.

The Avon Lakes Police Station has 28 full-time police officers and five others who only serve part-time. There is a night curfew for minors in the city, which starts between 11pm and 1am, depending on age.
