Walter Kühn (Admiral)

Walter Kühn (born July 4, 1920 in Chemnitz ; † after 1990 ) was a rear admiral in the People's Navy of the German Democratic Republic .

Life

Walter Kühn, the son of a worker, began training as a model carpenter after attending school in 1935 and joined the German Navy in 1940 . He took part in World War II and was last promoted to chief mate . After the war ended, he became a member of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) in 1945 and on July 1, 1945 joined the armed organs , namely the People's Police founded by the Soviet Military Administration (SMAD) . From 1945 to 1946 he was district leader of the People's Police in Chemnitz and in 1946 became a member of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED). Thereupon he acted between 1946 and 1949 successively as head of the protection police in Aue , Dresden and most recently in Oschatz . After he was an officer auditor at the University of the People's Police between 1949 and 1950, he acted between 1951 and 1952 as chairman of the party control commission of the main administration of the Seepolizei and the People's Police See (VP-See), which emerged on July 1, 1952 . He was then from 1952 to 1954 deputy for political work at the chief of staff of the VP-See and between 1954 and 1955 deputy head of the political department of the VP-See.

After being an officer's auditor at the Treptow Political School from 1955 to 1956, Frigate Captain Kühn acted as the successor to Frigate Captain Hellmut Neumeister between November 1, 1956 and December 31, 1958 as head of the fourth flotilla of the newly founded Volksmarine , whereupon on February 1, 1959 he was replaced by frigate captain Johannes Streubel . He himself was promoted to sea captain on March 1, 1958 and then attended the USSR Naval War Academy from 1959 to 1961 . Most recently he was deputy chief of staff for organization in the command of the People's Navy in 1961 and held this post until his dismissal on November 30, 1980. On March 1, 1976, Kühn became captain of the sea as part of the 20th anniversary of the National People's Army (NVA) promoted to rear admiral. For his services in the GDR, he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver and the gold medal for the battle for “For Merit for the People and the Fatherland” .
