Nathaniel Mervin Haskell (born September 27, 1912 in Pittsfield , Maine , † February 8, 1983 in Portland , Maine) was an American politician and from January 6, 1953 to January 7, 1953 Governor of Maine.

Early years and political advancement

Nathaniel Haskell was born in Pittsfield. When he was two years old, his parents died. He moved to Portland with his sister and her husband. There he attended Deering High School . In 1934 he finished his law studies at the University of Maine , in the same year he was admitted to the bar. He moved into an office in downtown Portland where he worked as a lawyer throughout his life. In 1943, Haskell was elected to the Maine House of Representatives. In 1945, 1947 and 1949 he was re-elected and served four legislative terms in the House of Representatives. From 1949 to 1950 he was Speaker of the Chamber. In 1951 he was elected to the State Senate. After his re-election in 1953, he was elected President of the Senate.

governor

Burton M. Cross , his predecessor as Senate President, was elected as the new Governor of Maine in 1952 after Frederick G. Payne stepped down to serve in the United States Senate . Since December 24, 1952, Cross was governor, as there is no lieutenant governor in Maine and then, according to the Maine Constitution, the President of the Senate takes over the office of governor. Cross's tenure as Senate President ended on January 5, 1953. Haskell was elected the new Senate President the following day, taking over from Cross as Governor. A day later, on January 7, 1953, Cross was sworn in as governor and was able to take over the office from Haskell. Haskell went down in history as the governor of Maine with the shortest tenure, precisely 25 hours. Haskell then served regularly as Senate President. That same year he resigned from the Senate to become a judge on the Probate Court of the Cumberland County .

Private

Haskell was married to Barbara Martin. He had two children with her and died in Portland in 1983.
