Every embassy employee was accompanied in civilian clothes , and Switzerland became the protecting power . The embassy employees returned to the United States on the SS Drottningholm (Swedish America Line ).

Charge d'Affaires (1791-1869), studied medicine in 1816 at the University of Harvard, several years worked in Boston as a doctor, then he studied medicine in France. In Paris he married the widow of Mario Joseph Sue, a doctor of Louis XVIII. After James Brown resigned as envoy, he served as chargé d'affaires in Paris in 1830. From 1848 to 1850 he advocated the construction of a Panama Canal under international control and the exchange of inexpensive editions of literature to promote understanding of cultures. His written estate is in the Library of Congress .
