William Short

William Short (* 1756 or 1759 ; † 1849 ) was an American diplomat .

Life

Short was between 1785 and 1789 private secretary to the then Plenipotentiary Minister in France Thomas Jefferson and was appointed his successor on April 20, 1790. After receiving the letter of accreditation, he remained in this post until May 15, 1792, whereupon Governor Morris became his successor there. He himself was appointed Minister-Resident in the Netherlands on January 16, 1792 as the successor to Charles William Frederic Dumas , where he handed over his credentials on June 18, 1792. He held this office until December 19, 1792, but it was not until November 6, 1794 that John Quincy Adams succeeded him there.

On May 28, 1794 Short was appointed Minister Resident in Spain and replaced William Carmichael after the letter of accreditation was handed over on September 7, 1794 . He remained in this position until November 1, 1795, with this post only being filled again on September 10, 1797 with David Humphreys . He was last appointed Minister -Resident in Russia on September 8, 1808, during a break in the US Senate . However, this appointment was revoked by the Senate during his trip to Russia , so he did not actually take up the post.

After his death he was buried in the Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia .
