The John F. Kennedy House is on Kennedyplatz in Darmstadt-Mitte in Darmstadt . The building, named after John F. Kennedy , was originally an America House and is now used as a literature house and art archive in Darmstadt .
history
The John F. Kennedy House was built in 1951 as the "US Residence Office" ( America House ) according to the plans of the architect Peter Grund in a dominant position in urban space. The building initially served as an American county office . From 1953 it served as America House, making it the first German-American Institute in Germany. In 1963 the building was renamed "John F. Kennedy House". In 1966 the building was rebuilt .
The building has been used as a literature house since 1998 . The Kennedy House also houses the Darmstadt Art Archive .
architecture
In the north, the John F. Kennedy House borders the building of the former Reichsbank .
The architecture of the five-storey administration building consists of traditional, restorative style elements from the 1930s and 1940s and some modern stylistic elements from post-war modernism . The floor heights and the window dimensions were adjusted to the historical neighboring buildings.
The traditional style is evident in the use of ashlar on the facade and especially in the ornate framing of the entrance door and in the emphasis on the corners with slightly protruding facade panels . The seven stone portraits between the windows of the top floor on the south facade are reminiscent of the architectural sculptures of earlier stylistic epochs . The portraits were probably created by seven sculptors under the guidance of Fritz Schwarzbeck . The perforated facade with the asymmetrically arranged sundial and the flat roof appear modern .
