Horst "Luffe" Wolter (born June 8, 1942 in Berlin ) is a former German football player .

Life

Horst Wolter describes himself as a "backpacker Berliner" and as born in the Mark Brandenburg . In 1952 he and his parents left the former GDR, where he was previously a member of the Young Pioneers , and since then has lived in Berlin-Charlottenburg and completed an apprenticeship as a baker in Berlin; hence its nickname “Luffe”, as traditionally known as bread rolls in Braunschweig. In the afternoon he trained as a right winger at SC Charlottenburg . Due to the intense physical double stress, he temporarily changed his position to goalkeeper because he had to run less there.

Career

Wolter came to Eintracht Braunschweig from Berlin's SC Charlottenburg in 1959 , initially as a right winger in the so-called special youth . Since 1960 he played as a goalkeeper first in the A-youth and then from 1961 in the Oberliga Nord , at that time the highest German division before the introduction of the Bundesliga. He came to this position by chance because the previous goalkeeper Heinz Winnecke left Eintracht and there was no replacement. On December 3, 1961 Wolter made his debut in the Oberliga Nord in the 3-1 win against Eintracht Nordhorn. Wolter made five appearances for Eintracht in the Oberliga Nord. Wolter completed 243 games as a goalkeeper in the Bundesliga between 1963 and 1977 for Eintracht (195) and Hertha BSC (48). In 1967 he became German champions as the regular goalkeeper of the Braunschweig team . Overall, the team for which Wolter was in goal conceded only 27 goals in the championship year and thus set a Bundesliga record that was only beaten in 1988 by Werder Bremen under Otto Rehhagel with the then goalkeeper Oliver Reck . In 1975 he was surprisingly runner-up with Hertha BSC, where he also worked as a manager in the late 1980s. In 1977 he left Hertha and played for VfL Seesen for one more season .

Wolter only played 13 games for the German national soccer team between 1967 and 1970 , as he was always the substitute goalkeeper behind Sepp Maier . He finished third with the national team at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico . The 1-0 game for third place against Uruguay was his last international match. He is thus the only German goalkeeper who has not conceded a goal in a World Cup.

Together with the team that had won 3rd place at the 1970 World Cup, he received the Silver Laurel Leaf.

In 1971 Wolter was sentenced to a fine of 4,400  DM for his involvement in the Bundesliga scandal . The reason was the incidents in the relegation battle in 1971, in which there had been manipulations. A total of 16 Braunschweig players confessed to the DFB that they had not exercised any manipulation in the match against Oberhausen, which ended 1-1, but Arminia Bielefeld promised the Braunschweig players an additional bonus of 120,000 DM (later increased to 170,000 DM). 100,000 DM were paid out in advance, 40,000 DM after the game.

Special 30 Pfennig “WM 1974” stamp issued by the Deutsche Bundespost

A special stamp issued by the Deutsche Bundespost (Michel no. 811) for the soccer World Cup in Germany on May 15, 1974 shows a parade by Horst Wolter, albeit slightly alienated, as traditionally living people are not depicted on German postage stamps .

After the career

In addition to his career, Wolter completed an apprenticeship as a banker, later he was manager of Hertha BSC from 1986 to November 1990 . He then worked as an insurance broker. In 2000, he was diagnosed with lymph gland cancer, which he successfully overcame. Wolter lives in Bad Harzburg . There he is also chairman of the economic advisory board of the Goslarer SC .
