Stamp album
A stamp album is a book with pages designed to hold and accommodate postage stamps . In the early days of stamp collecting, stamps were glued directly into the stamp album in different ways, nowadays almost exclusively stick-in albums predominate, so that the collectibles remain as undamaged as possible.
history
The first stamp albums, which appeared in 1862, had stamps stuck directly into them. However, the stamp albums were constantly being improved. In 1881 there were the first glue seams for attaching the stamps in the stamp album. Shortly afterwards, the first screw-stitched stamp album appeared . The first stamp albums that did not use a fold came on the market after the Second World War ; this is particularly useful for collecting postage fresh, as the gum is better protected.
Stock book
The classic stock book is a bound book of several pages, with several transparent strips arranged in lines on each cardboard page. The strips can be made of thin parchment paper or clear plastic film. The background is white or black. The individual pages are covered with protective sheets made of thin paper so that the inserted stamps cannot touch and damage each other when the stock book is closed.
A golden decorative strip often marks the front of the cover, the cover itself is made of imitation leather, linen or imitation linen. Particularly high-quality albums can also have a real leather cover. The improved version of the stock book is not rigidly bound, but has single sheets in a spring binder or a ring binder.
Pre-printed album
Pre-printed albums were already on the market at the beginning of the 20th century, initially the stamps were glued in, later provided with creases and, since the mid-1950s, placed in clip pockets . Form albums are always spring binders or ring binders. The sheets are made of thicker paper.
The design of the leaves offers good orientation and structure. Pre-printed albums with a long tradition, such as Schaubek or Leuchtturm , have a central axis and conservative typography; the album from Schwanberger Verlag / Michel turned to modern typography, which has been more common since the 20th century, with left- or right-aligned placement.
Pre-printed albums have the disadvantage that they offer little flexibility with regard to individual different brands, such as pairs or corner pieces. With desktop publishing or word processing programs , collectors can relatively easily design their own sheets for such stamp albums. Corresponding electronic templates can already be found on the Internet, which can be easily adapted to your own needs on the PC and then printed out.
