After graduating from school, she initially worked as a secretary, but then took on acting roles again. However, she could no longer build on the success of her childhood. In the Swedish provinces, she appeared in very different roles at smaller theaters, and earned her living as a vacation replacement for secretaries in a private heart clinic in Stockholm . In addition, Nilsson tried as a singer and released the pop song Keep on Dancing in 1977 . The single was also released in Denmark, but was not a great success.

1999 in the ZDF - documentary series 37 degrees , the film I was Pippi Longstocking - a child star grew up broadcast. In 2000 the Swiss director Xavier Koller brought Nilsson back in front of the camera for the remake of Kurt Tucholsky's novel “ Schloß Gripsholm ” , where she played alongside Ulrich Noethen , Heike Makatsch and Jasmin Tabatabai . In 2003 she was a guest on the 70s show by Hape Kerkeling . In 2006 she appeared in the miniseries AK3 , and a year later in the film Numerologists . Since 2007 she has played a recurring role as forensic doctor Ewa in the ZDF crime series Der Kommissar und das Meer . This was hailed as her comeback in the media . The first film in the series with Walter Sittler and Paprika Steen was shown in 2007 under the title Den du nicht Siehst .

In 2009 Nilsson took part in Kändisdjungeln , the first and only season of the Swedish version of I'm a Star - Get Me Out of Here! . She reached fourth place on the show.
