Roland Büchner

Roland Büchner (born February 16, 1954 in Karlstadt ) is a German church musician and choir director . From 1994 to 2019 he was the cathedral music director at Regensburg Cathedral and thus the choirmaster of the Regensburger Domspatzen .

Life

Roland Büchner studied at the Regensburg Academy for Catholic Church Music and Music Education and at the University of Music and Theater in Munich , with Franz Lehrndorfer , among others . He graduated with the State Artistic Examination in church music and a diploma in organ concert. During his studies he worked as a collegiate bandmaster in the Bavarian pilgrimage town of Altötting . He taught Gregorian chant and choral conducting at the vocational school for music .

From 1985 to 1994 Roland Büchner directed the concert choir at the Academy for Catholic Church Music and Music Education in Regensburg and was also a lecturer for organ and choir conducting. In 1994 he was appointed Regensburg Cathedral Music Director to succeed Georg Ratzinger . Büchner is a holder of the St. Wolfgang Merit Medal and a cultural award winner from the city of Regensburg . He is married, has four children and is the first non-spiritual Regensburg Cathedral Kapellmeister since Fortunatus Cavallo (1769–1801).

While the Regensburger Domspatzen sang one of his own compositions during live performances under his direction, Büchner usually used the name of his maternal grandfather, Joseph Birkl, as a pseudonym in the program booklet .

On March 25, 2019, the diocese of Regensburg announced that Christian Heiss will take over the office of cathedral music director as Büchner's successor from September 1, 2019. He was adopted at a pontifical service on July 17, 2019. After the service, all the choirs of the Domspatzen on Domplatz formed an honor trellis in his honor.

Honors

In June 2009 Büchner was appointed honorary professor at the University of Church Music in Regensburg due to his musical merits with the Regensburger Domspatzen and the close connection to the local music college . On September 22nd, 2018 he received the Orlando-di-Lasso-Medal from the General Cecilia Association for Germany (ACV) for his music-cultural and music-educating work.
