Brandenburg Gate (stamp series)

Berlin overprint

Brandenburger Tor is a German definitive stamp series that appeared from April 1966 to April 14, 1967 . The series was issued in the Federal Republic of Germany and in West Berlin . It appeared in rolls , but was also printed in stamp booklets and, for collectors, in sheets . The set comprises five values each. The only difference between the Berlin values was the word “Berlin”; Color and value were the same.

As with all stamps that are printed in rolls and sheets, horizontal pairs and marginal pieces of the stamps form a special collection area, because you can use them to prove that the stamps come from sheets. The pairs fetch higher prices than two single brands.

Motif and postwar

Each postage stamp in the series shows the same motif, the Brandenburg Gate , in a different color. The picture is idealized, you should have seen the Berlin Wall from this perspective at that time .

The stamps were objected to in shipments to the Soviet Union and sent back to the Federal Republic. Such letters are collected by specialists as post-war receipts.

particularities

The classic variants of gumming with roll brands - especially when sold from machines - suffered from the problem that they tended to stick together when the humidity was higher. As a trial, therefore, part of the overlay was provided with a special, less moisture-sensitive rubber coating. These specimens are valued by collectors at a significantly higher price.

The value of 30 Pfennig came to the counter “uncontrolled”, i. H. contrary to the usual procedure, there was no official date of first issue in April 1966.
