    background

    The elections for the Catalan regional parliament were brought forward by about a year after the multi-party coalition of the three left-wing parties Socialist Party of Catalonia (PSC) , Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC) and the green-alternative ICV - EUiA broke up due to the exit of the ERC. The direct reason for this was disputes over the new Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia , which was adopted in a referendum on June 18, 2006, albeit with a disappointingly low turnout.

    In addition to the long-running political issue, the question of Catalonia's status within Spain, issues such as the reform of the tax system, immigration to Spain and social security also played a role in the subsequent election campaign. As a result, the opposition CiU gained votes and seats and became the strongest faction. After negotiations, however, the old three-party coalition consisting of the PSC, ERC and ICV-EUiA was reissued. PSC leader José Montilla was elected President of the Generalitat de Catalunya .
