José Montilla Aguilera [ xoˈse monˈtiʎa agiˈleɾa ] (born January 15, 1955 in Iznájar , Cordoba Province ) is a Catalan politician who belongs to the Partit dels Socialistes de Catalunya (PSC). From November 28, 2006 to December 27, 2010 he was President of the Generalitat de Catalunya , the autonomous government of Catalonia . He was the first immigrant from another Spanish region to hold this post.

Career

Montilla came to Catalonia with his family in 1971 at the age of 16; At that time, many residents of the poor regions in the south and central Spain moved to the economic centers of Madrid , Catalonia and the Basque Country . In 1978 he joined the PSC, in 1983 he became mayor of Cornellà de Llobregat , a city near Barcelona . In the elections of 1999 and 2003, he was confirmed in both cases by an absolute majority in office and practiced it out until April 2004 to the Spanish industry minister in the Zapatero government was appointed, having previously one month to the members of the Spanish Parliament had been elected. The PSC had already elected him in 2000 as its first secretary and thus into the most important position in the party leadership.

In September 2006, Montilla resigned from his ministerial office in order to run as the top candidate in the elections to the Catalan parliament . On November 28, he was named 128th President of the Generalitat de Catalunya at the head of a coalition of PSC, Iniciativa per Catalunya Verds (IC-V) and Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) .

After all three parties had suffered massive losses in mandates in the regional elections in November 2010 , the coalition could not continue and Montilla lost his post as president to Artur Mas .
