Democratic Union of Catalonia ( UDC or Unió , German: Democratic Union of Catalonia ) is an in liquidation exploiting Dende Christian Democrat regional party in Catalonia . She represents a moderate, conservative regionalism and ran from 1979 to 2015 in elections in the party alliance Convergència i Unió (CiU) together with the liberal-regionalist Convergència Democràtica de Catalunya . However, this party alliance was dissolved in June 2015. UDC was a member of the European People's Party ; in the 2014–2019 legislative period it has one seat in the European Parliament . Insolvency proceedings were opened against the party's assets in September 2016 .

The party was founded in 1931. During the Second Spanish Republic (1931-36) she represented moderate regionalist positions and advocated the Catalan Statute of Autonomy, but not for the sovereignty declared unilaterally by the Catalan government in 1934. In the Spanish Civil War , she sided with the Republican government, but came into conflict with their anarchist allies due to their Catholic orientation.

During the dictatorship of General Francisco Franco , UDC retreated into the underground, where it concentrated mainly on cultural activities such as the promotion of the Catalan language (which the regime banned) . She also maintained contacts with other regionalist underground parties, such as the Basque nationalist PNV party . In 1961 UDC took part in the founding of the Christian Democratic International .

After the legalization of the parties in the course of the transition to democracy after the death of Franco, UDC joined the European People's Party . In the first democratic parliamentary elections in 1977 it won a member of parliament. Two years later, she formed a solid alliance with the liberal-regionalist Convergència Democràtica de Catalunya (CDC). This alliance, Convergència i Unió , achieved a relative majority in the Catalan parliament in the regional elections in 1980 and, with CDC chairman Jordi Pujol, was the head of government of Catalonia without interruption until 2003. The UDC provided Miquel Coll , Joaquim Xicoy and Joan Rigol as the President of the Catalan Parliament.

The President of the UDC (1987-2016), Josep Antoni Duran i Lleida , was also the chairman of the CiU parliamentary group in the Spanish Parliament from 2004 to 2016 . Within the now dissolved alliance, UDC was more open to cooperation with the large Spanish parties PSOE and PP , while CDC represents more regionalist-nationalist positions.

On January 16, 2016 Josep Antoni Duran Lleida resigned from his party positions. He justified this step with the two electoral defeats in September ( parliamentary elections in Catalonia ) and December 2015 ( parliamentary elections in Spain 2015 ).

In the meantime it became known that a Catalan entrepreneur made generous donations to the UDC party (EUR 100,000) and the CDC (EUR 500,000) in return for public contracts. Gustavo Buesa , also known in Catalonia as the Catalan Garbage King, was arrested by the Civil Guard and Anti-Corruption Agency on July 13, 2016 on charges made against him . It is also linked to allegations of corruption against the Pujol family .

At the party's own application, insolvency proceedings for its assets were opened in September 2016 due to over-indebtedness. As a result, UDC ceased its political activities in March 2017. As a legal person , the party only continues to exist for the purpose of liquidation. The Units per Avançar party was founded as the political successor organization in June 2017 .
