Europamarke is the collective term for the postage stamps that have been issued by European countries or their postal administrations since 1956 with a common motif or theme with a European reference .

history

1956 to 1959 under the sponsorship of the coal and steel union

The idea that European countries should annually issue postage stamps with common motifs arose in the 1950s. The stamps were intended to symbolize the common interests and goals of the nations that were involved.

The six founding members of the Coal and Steel Community ( Belgium , Federal Republic of Germany , France , Italy , Luxembourg and the Netherlands ) issued a total of 13 European brands on September 15, 1956.

In 1957 the series was issued without a watermark . However, a few sheets were accidentally printed on watermarked paper, whereupon the Deutsche Bundespost had another 10 million reprinted with watermarks to prevent speculative developments.

1960 to 1992 under the sponsorship of the CEPT

Faroe Islands

At a conference of the post offices of Europe in Montreux , Switzerland in 1959, the postal administrations of 19 European countries founded an umbrella organization under the name CEPT . It was also decided to start the joint issue of special postage stamps under the name CEPT.

Until 1973, the European brands appeared with a common motif, after which only a common theme was defined for the brands, which was then implemented nationally. The selected topics of the joint editions mostly relate to European history and culture and represent both similarities and the cultural diversity of the European peoples. 1984 is an exception, in which on the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary again - and so far for the last time - brands with uniform motif appeared.

1993 until today under the sponsorship of PostEurop

With the liberalization of the postal market in Europe, there was a separation between the state authorities responsible for regulating the postal system and the commercial postal companies , which in 1992 also resulted in the establishment of a separate European organization of postal companies ( PostEurop ).

With the assumption of sponsorship for the European brands by PostEurop, the abbreviation CEPT is no longer printed on the European brands, which are now printed with "Europe". In 1993 PostEurop had members from 26 countries - today there are 48.

PostEurop has held an annual competition for the design of the best EUROPA brand since 2002. EUROPA stamps are intended to emphasize cooperation in the field of postal services and particularly in relation to the promotion of philately . They also help to make the public aware of the common roots, the culture and history of Europe and the common goals.

Examples

Exemplary representation of the brand motif “Children build a star tower” from 2000, the design comes from the French artist Jean-Paul Cousin.

Sympathy or follow-up issues

In addition to the CEPT or joint issues, there are also so-called sympathy or follow-up issues from postal administrations or postal companies that are not affiliated with the carrier associations.
