Karl Hans Walter
Karl Hans Walter (born July 30, 1911 in Schwäbisch Gmünd ; † March 4, 1999 in Wertheim ) was a German graphic artist, draftsman, type designer and university lecturer.
Life
After training as a goldsmith in Schwabisch Gmund Walter studied from 1930 at the School of Applied Arts in Stuttgart . Interrupted by a two-year stay in Stockholm , he continued his studies at the State School for Applied Arts in Munich with Fritz Helmuth Ehmcke until 1935 . He then worked as a freelance commercial artist in Stuttgart. In 1939 he was drafted into military service in World War II. After his release from captivity in 1946, he directed a basic class at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart from 1948 to 1953 . In 1953 he was appointed professor for applied graphics at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg . From 1965 to 1967 he was president of the academy. After his retirement in 1976 he lived in Pöcking on Lake Starnberg . His estate is in the German Art Archive of the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg .

Karl Hans Walter designed numerous postage stamps for the Deutsche Bundespost , posters and book covers. He also worked as a book illustrator and type designer. Walter designed a total of 17 special stamps, a block with three stamps and a permanent series for the Deutsche Bundespost: Heinemann permanent series comprising 44 values of the Bundespost and the Bundespost Berlin with a circulation of 11.2 billion stamps. Walter also designed the poster for the international book exhibition for young people .
