Frank Burkhard Bernhard Appel (born July 29, 1961 in Hamburg ) is a German manager . He has been a member of the Management Board since 2002 and Chairman of the Management Board of Deutsche Post AG since February 2008 , appointed until October 2022. He is also a member of the Supervisory Board of Adidas AG and a member of the Senate of the Max Planck Society .

Origin and studies (1961 to 1993)

Frank Appel grew up in Hamburg-Bergedorf . According to her own statement, "a classic middle-class child, in a new Hamburg district, in a 90 square meter row house, I shared eight square meters with my brother for 15 years". His father worked in sales for a shampoo company and he earned his first money at the age of 16 during the holidays by displaying and labeling cosmetic products in Hamburg shops. When he was 18, he wanted to become a professor of neurobiology . After graduating from high school in Lohbrügge in 1981 and doing military service in the air force in the ground service, he began to study chemistry at the University of Munich in 1983 at the age of 22 . He completed his studies in 1989 as a qualified chemist. In 1993 he did his doctorate in neurobiology at the ETH Zurich on the topic of Importance of the immunoglobulin-like domains and the fibronectin type III homologous repeats of the neural cell adhesion molecule L1 for neurite outgrowth, cell body adhesion and signal transduction .

Frank Appel is married, has two children and lives in Königswinter near Bonn.

Career (1993 to date)

From 1993 Frank Appel worked in a German branch of the management consultant McKinsey and became a member of the management there in 1999.
In 2000, he moved to Deutsche Post AG as head of corporate development .

In 2002 he was appointed member of the board of directors of the group and was responsible for Global Business Services , global key account management for Global Customer Solutions and the operational management of the group's First Choice program . In 2005 he organized the takeover of the British logistics company Exel .
After long-time Post Manager Klaus Zumwinkel offered to resign in February 2008, Frank Appel was unanimously elected by the Supervisory Board on February 18, with immediate effect, as the new CEO of Post. Even before the tax allegations against Klaus Zumwinkel, Appel was traded as his possible successor. He also succeeded Zumwinkel as Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Postbank . On December 31, 2010, Appel resigned from the Postbank supervisory board.

As CEO of Swiss Post, Frank Appel earned almost ten million euros in 2016; of this, the multi-year variable remuneration amounted to around six million euros.

On May 9, 2018, Appel was elected to the Supervisory Board by the Annual General Meeting of Adidas AG.
