On the occasion of the 525th anniversary of the city charter, a replica of the historical distance column was inaugurated on May 18, 2013 at the original location, which was made by Steinrestaurierung Hain from Meissen. After initial efforts by local history researcher Reinhold Schneider in the 1950s and 1960s to have this set up again, this was rejected by the city council at the time and a bus station was finally built on the market. It was only through the redesign of the market in the course of the relocation of the bus station in 1990 and the construction of the market fountain based on an idea by local researcher Reinhard Pfennig in 1995 that the prerequisites for a re-erection of the distance column were created. After long preparatory work by the Association for Homeland Care 1889 Ruhland / Oberlausitz eV, which was re-established in 1996, the efforts were crowned with success in cooperation with the research group Kursächsische Postmeilensäulen eV, local politics, many traders and, ultimately, countless donations from citizens and friends of the city.
