The motel was partly built in 1967 on the site of the former city brick and was the "first facility of its kind in the GDR."

The building was built according to a design by the architect Karl Kübler and consisted of four single-storey ward blocks with a covered pergola , which enclosed an atrium with parking spaces for cars. The building housed a reception, an Intershop store , a restaurant, a kitchen and public eatery. The ward block had 140 beds; 120 seats were available in the restaurant. The building was built using the ELCON system (BRD). The motel was part of the Interhotel chain. Regular guests included players from foreign football clubs who had come to Dresden for European Cup matches.

In 1990 the motel was renamed the “Am Bismarck Tower ” hotel , but then closed and demolished. Today there are multi-storey residential buildings in its place.

Post mileage column (1976)

In front of the motel, in 1967, a non-true replica of a Saxon post-mile column , which was made by Werner Hempel , and is still there. This is reminiscent of the four distance columns that were erected in front of the Dresden city gates in 1722. A copy of the distance column from the Wilsdruffer Tor was erected here. A true-to-original replica of this column, made in 1997 by the Hain Restoration Company in Meißen, is on the Telekom site on Herta-Lindner-Strasse (today the Freiberger Strasse / Herta-Lindner Strasse intersection) not far from the original location.
