Andrew Declan "Andy" Keogh [ kjoʊ ] (born May 16, 1986 in Dublin ) is an Irish football player . The striker - preferably in the role of a center forward , but occasionally also as a winger or a slightly lagging striker - is under contract with the Australian first division club Perth Glory and is an Irish international .

Career

society

Born in the south of Dublin, Keogh began playing football with the local FC Cabinteely and St. Josephs Boys, before moving to England at the age of 16 in the youth division of Leeds United ; he had rejected an offer from Wolverhampton Wanderers . The Leeds club loaned him to the fourth division Scunthorpe United at the beginning of the 2004/05 season .

After his league debut, which had ended on August 7, 2004 with a 3-1 win against Rochdale AFC , he scored a goal on his second appearance to win 2-0 away at Cheltenham Town . In twelve games he got a total of two goals for Scunthorpe United; then his club called him back to Leeds, as the injury situation in the professional team had come to a head. Nevertheless, he stayed until the end of 2004 with the exception of a cup game without a league game for Leeds. Instead, he was used permanently in the reserve elf. In January 2005 he moved again on loan to the fourth division, where he should now replace David Nugent who had migrated to Preston North End at Bury FC .

The stay in Bury was short-lived, as Scunthorpe's coach Brian Laws Leeds United successfully submitted a transfer offer of around £ 50,000 in February 2005, so Keogh played again for Scunthorpe United on February 14, 2005. There he scored a goal in the further course of the season and was part of the team that rose behind Yeovil Town in the third-rate Football League One .

Keogh's sporting breakthrough came in the 2005/06 season. He played along with that of Sheffield United pledged Billy Sharp by storm; together, the two 19-year-olds scored 38 goals, 15 of them Keogh. In the FA Cup, Keogh scored a goal against England goalkeeper David James in the third round in a 3-1 defeat at first division club Manchester City . The Keogh / Sharp duo were distinguished by their complementary qualities. While Sharp showed himself to be more dangerous on the whole, Keogh was more technically adept and versatile, served as a safe pass station and often avoided the outside positions when attacking actions were started. The increase in performance was not hidden higher-class clubs and so Keogh moved after another half season on January 23, 2007 to the Wolverhampton Wanderers, who were playing in the second-rate Football League Championship at the time . The transfer fee was £ 600,000 plus additional performance-based bonus payments of up to £ 250,000.

Keogh also showed good performance right away in the higher division; while the opposing coach of the Queens Park Rangers described him after the 2-0 defeat of his club as "one of the best commitments of the season". With five goals he helped in the remaining games of the season that the "Wolves" reached a place in the play-offs, the semi-finals of which were lost to West Bromwich Albion . In recognition of this, before the beginning of the subsequent 2007/08 season, he received the renowned jersey number 9, which is traditionally worn by the key player in the attack center. With eleven competitive goals throughout the season, he was the club's second-best goalscorer, but Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, who was signed in January 2008, scored twelve goals in the second half of the season.

In addition to the better scorer properties of Ebanks-Blake, the additional new purchase Chris Iwelumo from Charlton Athletic ensured that Keogh was not in the team 21 times in his 42 appearances in the 2008/09 promotion season . Nevertheless, he signed a new contract in Wolverhampton in February 2009, which tied him to the club until the end of the 2011/12 season. At the beginning of the Premier League season 2009/10 Keogh benefited from injuries to competitors Ebanks-Blake, Iwelumo and the other newcomer Kevin Doyle ; thus he was regularly in the starting line-up again and scored the only goal to win 1-0 at Wigan Athletic , which was also the first Premier League away win (and the first first division away win since 1984) in the history of Wolves.

In August 2010 Andy Keogh moved on loan to Cardiff City in the Football League Championship. Originally, the loan business was set up for the entire 2010/11 season, but at the end of January 2011, after 16 league games, he changed the loan club and henceforth helped out at Bristol City - also in the second division.

At the beginning of the 2011/12 season, Keogh moved again on loan to Leeds United .

National team

After Caleb Folan's injury-related cancellation , Keogh received his first nomination for the Irish senior team in March 2007 under the then active coach Steve Staunton . He completed the first international game on May 24, 2007 in the friendly game against Ecuador in the New York Giants Stadium , which ended in a 1-1 draw. He then played in three qualifying matches for Euro 2008 . In the first game under the new sporting director Giovanni Trapattoni , he scored his first goal for Ireland exactly one year after his debut in the 1-1 friendly match against Serbia - the volley from the spin later even received the award for Irish "Goal of the Year" .
