David James Nugent (born May 2, 1985 in Huyton , Knowsley , England ) is an English football player who is under contract with the second division club Preston North End .

Athletic career

Club career

The striker first spent his youth at the Liverpool FC academy before they sorted him out. He then continued his training in the prestigious youth department of Bury FC and came in March 2002 against Port Vale at the age of only 16 years for the first team in the third division as a substitute for use. Despite this promising start, Nugent was initially unable to further develop his talent on the field, which changed for the better at the beginning of the 2004/05 season due to consistently good performances. As a result, he recommended himself for a move to a larger club.

In particular, rival Burnley FC was toying with a commitment from Nugent, who then decided in January 2005 to move to the second division club Preston North End - the transfer fee was 100,000 pounds. In his 32 championship appearances in the 2005/06 season, Nugent scored ten goals and reached the play-off games for promotion to the Premier League with his new club in fourth place , but where he failed in the semifinals at Leeds United . Despite renewed rumors of change, he played another year in Preston in the 2006/07 season, scored 15 goals in 44 games and even recommended himself for the English national team . Preston finished seventh this season.

In the summer of 2007, Nugent left Preston North End. After both Sunderland FC and Portsmouth FC had bid in the region of £ 6 million, Nugent was finally introduced as Portsmouth FC's new player on 11 July 2007 at a press conference with John Utaka . Just a few weeks after the start of the 2007/08 season , his new coach Harry Redknapp said after a League Cup game in which Nugent scored his first goal for Portsmouth that they were ready to sell Nugent again before the end of the August 31, 2007 transfer window because the club "needs a striker who can score 15 goals per season". In 2008 he won the FA Cup with Portsmouth .

In the summer of 2009 he switched to league rivals Burnley FC on loan .

On July 13, 2011, Nugent signed a three-year contract with Leicester City . After a total of four years at Leicester, he left the club after his contract expired and signed with Middlesbrough FC . With his new team he reached promotion to the Premier League as runner- up in the Football League Championship 2015/16 .

After losing his regular place in the Premier League in 2016/17 , David Nugent decided to change clubs again in January 2017 and joined the second division club Derby County . Two years later, the league rival Preston North End signed him .

English national team

Originally also eligible to play for the Irish national team, Nugent began his career in English national teams as an U-21 international when he played against Wales in February 2005. He scored his first goal on August 15, 2006 in the fourth game against Moldova, which ended in a 2-2 draw. Together with the talented Arsenal player Theo Walcott , he formed the attack formation against Switzerland on September 6, 2006, where he scored his second goal for the U-21 team and won the playoff with his team with a 3-2 win at the 2007 European Championships in the Netherlands . He was also used under new coach Stuart Pearce and scored his third goal in a 2-2 draw against Spain on his debut.

After public speculation about a possible nomination for the senior national team, Steve McClaren confirmed on March 19, 2007 that Nugent had already been under close scrutiny and finally nominated him to replace the injured Darren Bent of Charlton Athletic . Nine days later he was substituted on at a late point in the European Championship qualifier against Andorra in Barcelona and in the last minute of the game he finally promoted a shot on goal by Jermain Defoe to make it 3-0 over the goal line.

In June 2007 he came to the U-21 European Championship and reached the semi-finals in the Netherlands with his team.

useful information

  • With his first appearance for the English senior team, Nugent became the first Preston North End player since Tom Finney about 49 years earlier and the first second division player after David James (then active at West Ham United ) in 2003 - limited to outfield players even the first second division after Michael Gray from Sunderland FC in 1999.
  • Nugent is one of only three English players who have exactly one international appearance as a substitute and scored one goal - the other two players were Paul Goddard and Francis Jeffers .
