Alexander Francis "Alex" Neil (born June 9, 1981 in Bellshill ) is a former Scottish football player and current coach of the English second division club Preston North End .

Player career

Alex Neil began his playing career in the Scottish First Division in 1999/2000 with the Scottish second division Airdrieonians FC . In July 2000 he moved to the English second division club Barnsley , with whom he was relegated to the third division in 2001/02 . In the two subsequent seasons, the club missed the return to the second division.

On July 29, 2004, Neil signed a contract with the English fourth division club Mansfield Town , which he left after only one season to join the Scottish second division Hamilton Academical in August 2005 . His first season in Scotland he finished with his new club as third in the table. In the Scottish First Division 2007/08 , Neil won the championship with his team and thus secured promotion to the first division. After the class remaining in the first two seasons in the Scottish Premier League had been achieved, the club rose in 2010/11 as bottom of the table back in the second division.

Coaching career

Hamilton Academical

On April 6, 2013, Neil was hired on an interim basis as a player -coach at Hamilton Academical after the club had separated from long-time coach Billy Reid. On May 24, 2013 he was employed after five wins in seven games. In his first full season as player-coach, he led his team into the play-offs as runner-up in the Scottish Championship 2013/14 and achieved promotion to the first division in the play-off against the penultimate of the Scottish Premiership 2013/14 Hibernian Edinburgh .

Norwich City

After a good start in the Scottish Premiership 2014/15 , Neil accepted an offer from English second division Norwich City on January 9, 2015 after almost ten years in Hamilton and became the new coach of the relegated Premier League. He got off to a good start with his new team in the Football League Championship 2014/15 . Thanks to five wins in five games in February 2015, he was named Manager of the Month in the second division. Neil led Norwich as third in the table in the play-offs and secured promotion to the Premier League with a 2-0 final victory over Middlesbrough FC . As penultimate, the club rose a year later from the Premier League 2015/16 . After City did not play a direct return to the first division as hoped in the 2016/17 season , the club announced the separation from Alex Neil on March 10, 2017.

Preston North End

On July 4, 2017, Neil was introduced as the new coach of second division Preston North End .
