The Scottish Football League First Division was held for the 31st time in 2005/06 as only the second highest Scottish league under this name. In the second-highest division of men's football in Scotland , 10 clubs competed against each other in a total of 36 matchdays in the 2005/06 season. Each team played four times against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The championship was won by FC St. Mirren , who also secured participation in the 2006/07 Premier League season . Relegated to the Second Division had the FC Stranraer after relegation and Brechin City . Bryan Prunty of Airdrie United and Jason Scotland of St. Johnstone FC were top scorer with 15 goals .

Participants in the relegation games were FC Stranraer from this year's First Division, as well as the three teams from the Second Division , Greenock Morton , FC Peterhead and Partick Thistle . The first round winners played in the final round for a place for the following 2006/07 Scottish First Division season .
