The Scottish Championship was played for the fourth time in 2016/17 as the second highest division of men's football in Scotland . It was also the 111th edition of a second division football within the Scottish Football League . The league was officially played as the Ladbrokes Scottish Championship . The league followed the first-class Premiership and was above League One and Two , making it one of the four professional leagues within the Scottish Football League. The season was managed by the Scottish Football Association and began on August 6, 2016. The season ended with the 36th matchday on May 6, 2017.
In the 2016/17 season, ten clubs competed against each other in a total of 36 match days. Each team played twice at home and twice against every other team. As relegated from last year's Premiership , Dundee United came into the championship, as promoted from League One Dunfermline Athletic and Ayr United .
Hibernian Edinburgh secured the title and promotion with a 3-0 win against Queen of the South on April 15, 2017. FC Falkirk , Dundee United and Greenock Morton qualified for the promotion relegation . The Raith Rovers took part in the relegation . Ayr United relegated straight to Scottish League One .

Relegation
Participants in the relegation games are the ninth place from this year's championship, the Raith Rovers and three teams from League One , Brechin City , Alloa Athletic and Airdrieonians FC . The winners of the first round played in the last round for a place for the following Scottish Championship season 2017/18 .
