The Scottish Football League Division Two was played for the 50th time in 1955/56 . After the introduction of Division One , it was also the 50th edition of the men's second highest football division in the Scottish Football League under the name Division Two . In the 1955/56 season, 19 clubs competed against each other in a total of 36 match days. Each team played once at home and away against every other team. The 2-point rule applied . In the event of a tie, the goal quotient counted .
The championship was won by FC Queen's Park , who secured promotion to Division One together with second-placed Ayr United . The league was increased from 16 to 19 teams before the start of the season. Since there was no relegated team from Division One, five new teams were added. Including the two-time Scottish champions, FC Dumbarton as well as FC Stranraer , FC East Stirlingshire , FC Montrose and the Berwick Rangers . The top scorer with 41 goals was Ayr United's Peter Price .
