The listed Kursächsische Postmeile column is a distance column and is located on a small decorative square in the immediate vicinity of the Evangelical Church of St. Katharina in the southern Brandenburg town of Elsterwerda in the Elbe-Elster district .

history

In 1727, Poststrasse led through Elsterwerda to Doberlug and later to Berlin.

The city of Elsterwerda was one of the last cities in the Electorate of Saxony to receive a post mile pillar in 1738. Their original location was at the former Lucki Gate at the northern end of the former country road, as well as today's main road. At that time the northern border formed a ditch there, over which a bridge led. The pillar was made by the Dresdner Steinmetz Petersilie, cost 38 Silbertaler and was the most important waymarking in Elsterwerda for a century.

Around 1785 an embassy post ran twice a week on the Berlin-Elsterwerda-Dresden-Vienna mail route, which was later followed by a dragoon post and, in the 18th century, a carriage and express mail. The horses were stopped and unhitched in Elsterwerda at the Rautenkranz , at that time the most elegant inn in the city, and in the post office opposite, in which Elsterwerda town hall has been located since 1879 . After 1815, the Saxon distance information (1 hour / hour = 4.531 km) on the column z. Partly supplemented by Prussian miles .

Mayor Wilde had the distance column, which was lying around in Wallstrasse, restored during his term of office and erected at its current location, a small square near the Protestant church of St. Katharina . The area around the pillar was redesigned to create a decorative place. Further restorations were carried out in 1955/56 by the stonemason Voigt and in 1978 by the Finsterwald sculptor Rajewsky, who reworked the base and the top. In 1998 it was again extensively restored by the Bad Liebenwerda company Anlauf and was able to be put up again on May 21, 1999. The coat of arms had to be completely renewed (original coat of arms since then in the town hall). All other parts were preserved.

The space at the column was redesigned as part of the renovation of the main road in 2006.

construction

The distance column consists of seven parts and was made from Saxon sandstone. The base, pedestal and the crown of the pedestal form the substructure.

The superstructure consists of an intermediate plate, shaft, coat of arms piece and attachment.

philately

The column also attracted attention in philately . On the occasion of a district stamp exhibition in November 1957, a special envelope was made with the illustration of the column. In 1974, to mark the 25th anniversary of the Philatelic Working Group, another special envelope was made with a detail of the column and a special stamp was used. In 1988, for the 250th anniversary of the mail column in Elsterwerda, a card was designed and a special stamp was used again. On this occasion, the city post used it to stamp all mail for a month.
