Elsterwerda Town Hall (1910)

The Elsterwerda town hall is one of the oldest buildings in the southern Brandenburg town of Elsterwerda in the Elbe-Elster district . It is located on the corner of Hauptstrasse and Friedrich-Jage-Strasse in the immediate vicinity of the Protestant Katharinenkirche . The building was mentioned as an inn and post office in the Elsterwerda city register of 1711.

history

The row of houses opposite the St. Katharina Church is probably the oldest part of the city of Elsterwerda. This was already shown on the Oedersian map in the 16th century .

The owners of the former residential and fire towns No. 7 were a Melchior Schirmer in 1556, Abraham Schirmer in 1609 (mayor around 1641) and from 1692 Christian Schirmer. Further changes of ownership followed and in the Elsterwerda city book from 1711 it says about the house:

"If an inn and post house is also authorized to brew, has 40 passable shock, a thaler bullet, a hoof of land, does 5 days of rule service ..."

In 1879 the city council bought the post office building for 26,400 marks from the post office keeper Mittag. It was then set up as a town hall and district court. Before that, the meetings of the city council took place in their private apartments until 1866, or in the building of today's Hotel Weißes Ross , acquired by the city in 1865 , which was sold again to the innkeeper Gehre in 1879.

The first renovation work was carried out in 1897 by master bricklayer Friedrich Jage. For this purpose, the neighboring plot of land belonging to head gardener Thiemig was bought by the city, torn down and a breakthrough was made to Elsterstrasse, which runs parallel to the main road. This new street was initially named Amtsstraße and was renamed Friedrich-Jage-Straße in 1928. The town hall was expanded in the course of the renovation work carried out by Jage and received a corner turret. It received its present form in 1912 during extensive new construction work. Three more turrets were added, two new entrances were installed and the newly created conference room was furnished according to plans by the Dresden painter Baranowsky. The first public meeting took place here on November 15, 1912. Further important renovations were carried out after the Second World War in 1948, on the occasion of the 750th anniversary celebrations in 1960/61 and shortly after the political change in the GDR in 1993/94.

On April 6, 1995, the roof and the interior were completely destroyed by arson. Reconstruction of the building began on July 3, 1995. On August 28, 1996, the reconstruction work was completed and the house was handed over to its intended use. On May 2, 1996, the then mayor Peter Schwarz aligned the Elster, which was on the top of the corner tower, in the direction of the east industrial area.
