The diamond ring was one of the oldest buildings in the southern Brandenburg city of Elsterwerda in the Elbe-Elster district . It is located opposite the town hall on the corner of Hauptstrasse / Kirchgasse.

history

In the Elsterwerda city register of 1711, the building was the fireplace no. 7. Since it was inhabited by Hauptmann von Rohr , it was also called the Hauptmannsche Haus . It is no longer possible to determine when the old building was built. But it is known that as early as 1604 the Magister Steinhauer sold it to Hans Richter, who later sold it to Captain Georg von Rohr. The Rautenkranz was once the most elegant inn in the city and from 1727 belonged to the Kammergut. Here and in the opposite post office, the horses were stopped and unhitched for the regular postal service through Elsterwerda, which had been in place since the end of the 17th century. On February 28, 1820, it was given a long lease and after many years no structural changes had been made to the building, these were made in 1925 by the then resident innkeeper Wilhelm Thiele.

In 1945 the city of Elsterwerda became the owner of the building and the inn was closed in 1947/48. From 1952 to 1986 a school kitchen and the school canteen were housed here. In addition, there was an Intershop from 1980 to 1990 and a delicatessen shop from 1986 to 1990 . After the house was partially used by a milk shop until 1992 , it has since been on the priority list of urban redevelopment and is subject to the conditions of monument protection. In 1995 the previous owner Stefan Wolter received it back on the basis of a repatriation application and it subsequently changed hands several times. After a thorough examination of the building fabric, it was decided to demolish most of the building. However, a room with a historical cross vault had to be preserved. The demolition began in October 1998. After an old burial site was found during the renovation work in 1925, several graves have now also been found. According to the archaeologist Dr. Müller probably belonged to a cemetery that was abandoned in the 16th century. There was also the assumption that a monastery cemetery was located on this site, but this could not be confirmed. On March 16, 1999, further investigations revealed a kiln from the 19th century, which is the only surviving kiln in the Elbe-Elster district , and around 300–400 kg of ceramic remains , which suggests a large pottery. The laying of the foundation stone for the approximately 6 million  DM new building took place on April 14, 1999. The original structural structure had to be restored and lattice windows installed. The topping-out ceremony took place on August 6, 1999 and the new diamond-shaped wreath was ready for occupancy in January 2000. The building is currently used for assisted living . There are also business and commercial premises here.
