Gallery of the royal Saxon milestones

In this gallery of the royal Saxon milestones , the exact installation locations and other characteristics of the milestones set up in the Kingdom of Saxony from 1859 to 1866 are to be explained in more detail and existing photos collected. The milestones are owned by Saxony i. d. As a rule, the respective road construction authorities for the streets and paths on which these stones are located.

After the conversion to a new length of the mile, namely 7.5 km, in the Kingdom of Saxony in 1840, the remeasuring of the roads and the erection of new distance stones, called royal Saxon milestones , only began in 1858 by order of the Saxon Ministry of Finance . Station stones mark the starting point of a survey. Some were triangular in special cases. Milestones and half-milestones were set up along the road at the indicated distances. A branch stone was set up at the branching off of a side road on which a postal route ran from a main road . Border crossing stones marked the borders of Saxony. The production from Cotta sandstone and installation took place in 1859–66. Characteristic are the cast iron crowns, which vary in size depending on the type, on these milestones, which were to be painted sandstone- colored. From 1875 on, the metric system was in force in the German Empire. The milestones were history. This changeover to the metric system often led to the redesign of the milestones with corresponding changes to the information on the milestones. Compared to the Saxon post mile pillars , the stones from the mid-19th century are rather unadorned. This is one of the reasons why they were not viewed, preserved and cared for as monuments everywhere. In Saxony, the Royal Saxon milestones are listed as a whole under monument protection, which also includes replicas and remnants of these technical monuments that are true to the original.

Half-mile stone southwest of Eibenstock on Rautenkranzer Straße (connecting road to Neuer Wiesenhaus) very close to the Riedertberg . It is badly damaged and has not yet been restored.
Whole milestone on the S 276 in OT Blechhammer . The whole milestone of the postal route No. 205 Eibenstock – Klingenthal could be put up again after restoration. Under the Saxon crown it bears the inscriptions "Klingenthal 2.60 M." and "Eibenstock 1.00 M."
Whole milestone on the S 276 in the OT Neues Wiesenhaus . On the S 276 state road , the Zwickau road construction authority had another restored whole milestone set up near the original location. The restoration was carried out here by the stonemason company Bergers from Schlettau.
Ganzmeilenstein in OT Wildenthal , across from the parking lot on Drechselweg ( State road S 275), a restored whole milestone was set up in 2004. The restoration was carried out on behalf of the Zwickau Road Construction Office (which also financed the work) by the Bergers stonemason from Schlettau .

Johanngeorgenstadt
