history
In 1206 Schellenberg , a settlement at the foot of the castle of the same name, was first mentioned in a document. The Schellenburg , built in the 11th century, was the forerunner of today's Augustusburg ( Augustusburg hunting lodge ) and fell victim to fires in 1528 and 1547. In 1568, Elector August I of Saxony commissioned Hieronymus Lotter with a new building, which was already called Augustusburg in 1575. The mighty building, which was built in just four years, mainly served as a hunting and pleasure palace. The castle linden tree was planted in 1421 and is one of the oldest trees whose planting is clearly documented. In 1590 the name "Augustusburg" was transferred to the previous "Amt Schellenberg", which has been called Amt Augustusburg ever since . In July 1899 the city of Schellenberg was renamed Augustusburg. In 1911 the cable car was built, with which the city gained further tourist importance. This positive development has continued over the decades. With the renovation of the listed inner city area, the attraction for tourism increased once again.
At the beginning of the Nazi era , around 120 Nazi opponents from the surrounding "protective custody camps" were arrested in the summer of 1933 and had to do forced labor . A memorial plaque commemorates this event.
Incorporations
The former Jägerhof estate was incorporated into Schellenberg on March 1, 1891, and Augustusburg from 1899. On October 1, 1995, the former municipality of Grünberg became a district of Augustusburg. Erdmannsdorf (with the town of Kunnersdorf incorporated on April 1, 1929) and Hennersdorf followed on January 1, 1999.
