history

The settlement of Grünberg is assumed to be in the second half of the 12th century, although this is said to have been closely related to the construction of the Schellenburg .

The first documented mention of Gruninberg dates from 1352. Other forms of name that have been passed down are Grunenberg (1378), Grunberg (1445), Grünbergk (1552). The name means settlement on the green, wooded mountain .
With the introduction of the Reformation in 1539, the place in the church district Flöha belonged to the city branch of Schellenberg. Since 1590 the place was in the office of Augustusburg . For the construction of the Augustusburg in the years 1568 to 1572, the residents of the village had to do labor during the construction. Likewise, limestone was broken and burned by the residents in the limestone pits in the Schweddeytal near the Plaue district of Flöha to build the castle, and bricks were painted on the Grünberger Flur.

Around 1700 there was brief iron ore mining on Grünberger Flur, for example in a Grün Glück mine . Today you can find smoky quartz, milk quartz and red iron stone (hematite) in the area.

For 1735, the first evidence points to a school lesson in the village and for 1737 the name of the teacher is Johann David Uhlig. A school building was built in 1828. Another school building was built later, which today shapes the image of the village of Grünberg.

In 1820 the construction of the road from Augustusburg to Plaue began. In doing so, Röber, who was the owner of the inn at the time, set up the Grünberg inn as a horse unhitching station and transferred the bar license and inn fairness from the inheritance court to the inn, which subsequently played an important role in the life of the community.

With the construction of the neighboring Hohenfichte cotton mill in 1883 and subsequent factories in other places in the region, the place gradually changed from a farming village to a workers' residence. In the second half of the 19th century, with the construction of bandoneons by the Bäßler families, the construction of these instruments became a local trade, which made the place famous beyond its borders.

After the political change, two farms were set up as resettlers and a few craft businesses.

On October 1, 1995, Grünberg was incorporated into the city of Augustusburg.
