The place called "Rozzow" Rossau was first mentioned in 1378. At that time, no distinction was made between Ober- and Niederrossau. There is evidence for the mention of both places. a. for Niederrossau from 1551 as "Rossaw Nieder Gemeynn" and from 1791 as "Ober Roßau" and "Nieder Roßau". The listed Rossau Church in today's Niederrossau was built in 12/13. Century as a fortified church . It is therefore one of the oldest churches in Saxony.

The current community of Rossau was created on July 1, 1950 through the merger of the communities of Oberossau, Niederrossau and Weinsdorf (with the district of Liebenhain ). The municipal office is located in the Niederrossau district. The current districts of the community of Rossau belonged to different administrative units in earlier centuries.
