Panoramic view over Eppendorf

The municipality of Eppendorf is located in the lower Ore Mountains , about 20 kilometers east of Chemnitz and 15 kilometers southwest of Freiberg . Eppendorf extends along the Große Lößnitz , a tributary of the Flöha .

Typical for the area are the elongated settlements that often follow streams, as well as the extensive fields and pastures on the plateaus between the river valleys. The municipal area is characterized by agricultural land, only in the northwest is there a forest of around 100 hectares. Larger forests are located on the town limits on Borstendorfer and Leubsdorfer Flur. In the southeast of the municipality, the highest point is reached with the Waltersdorfer Höhe (590 m above sea level).

Community structure

In addition to Eppendorf, the formerly independent communities Kleinhartmannsdorf (incorporated on October 1, 1995) and Großwaltersdorf (incorporated on October 1, 1998) belong to the community.

history

In the 13th century, Eppendorf and Ebersbach (today merged with Eppendorf) were established as Waldhufendörfer by colonists . Eppendorf first appeared in writing in 1336 when Margrave Friedrich von Meißen pledged Schellenberg Castle to Vogt Heinrich II, the elder . Kleinhartmannsdorf was first mentioned in a document in 1376 and Großwaltersdorf in 1378.

1560 was Elector Augustus a hunting lodge with manor and Vorwerk in Eppendorf build. There are hardly any traces left of the small castle today, the estate came into the possession of the hereditary court . Since 1590 the place belonged to the office of Augustusburg .

Until the end of the 19th century, the residents were mainly active in agriculture. The mediocre soil quality and damage caused by game used to lead to bad harvests and, as a result, to famine. Eppendorf and its surroundings were not spared from the Hussite Wars , the Thirty Years War and the plague epidemics .

In 1551 one counted in Eppendorf

In Eppendorf, as in other communities in the Lower Ore Mountains, industrialization took hold from the middle of the 19th century. The first factories produced toys. In 1891 the Haug und Leonhardt shoe factory was founded.

Albertplatz

The shoe factory (in the GDR under the name “Kranich”), the VEB “Planet” linen manufacture and the VEB “Ratiomat” kitchen furniture were the three large companies in Eppendorf that defined the image of the place until the early 1990s. In 1995 Ursula Pfeiler took over a small part of the "Planet" linen manufacture and continued it as Pfeiler Laundry tradition OHG . Since the entrepreneur retired, the company has been run as Pfeiler Linen Manufaktur GmbH since 2007 by Christoph Hagedorn.

Today the economy in Eppendorf is structured as a small and medium-sized company.

coat of arms

The Eppendorfer coat of arms is composed of the three old coats of arms of the sub-towns Eppendorf ( crane ), Kleinhartmannsdorf ( hand ) and Großwaltersdorf ( Ross ).

Blazon : “Divided into a lowered drawbar cut that ends at an obtuse angle; above, in blue, a silver crane, holding a silver stone with his right foot; in front below in green a silver right hand growing from the front edge of the shield, holding a small silver table; back in gold from the rear edge of the shield growing black steed. "

According to the decision of the municipal council on June 11, 2002, the coat of arms is included in the official seal. The design of the coat of arms comes from Gerhard Bieber, graduate designer. This was preceded by an endorsement by the Saxon Central State Archives in May 2002.

The old coat of arms of Eppendorf shows a crane holding a stone in its raised claw. This symbol says that as vigilance fades, the stone will fall onto the claws of the other foot. The crane has been attested in the community seal since 1814.

Community partnerships

Eppendorf has had a partnership with the city of Lohmar in North Rhine-Westphalia since September 12, 1990 . This was expanded to include the Lohmar partner communities Frouard and Pompey in Lorraine ; the two French communities near Nancy are connected by a bridge over the Moselle . On November 20, 1999, a partnership agreement was signed between the Kleinhartmannsdorf district and the Czech municipality of Malkov at the foot of the Ore Mountains.

Culture and sights

The church in Eppendorf was consecrated in 1865. It was built according to plans by the architect Christian Friedrich Arnold and is one of the largest village churches in Saxony.

Economy and Infrastructure

In addition to smaller agricultural, trading and handicraft businesses, tourism is playing an increasing role in the economic structure of the municipality (two hotels, holiday homes and guest houses). At the southern exit of Eppendorf, the industrial area Reifländer Straße was designated.

Eppendorf is the location of a primary school and a high school .
