Walter Julius Gensel (born December 18, 1835 in Schellenberg , † March 9, 1916 in Leipzig ) was a German lawyer and politician ( National Liberal Party ). He was a member of the Reichstag and the Saxon Landtag .

Life

The son of the judiciary, Ernst Walter Gensel (1806–1886), attended grammar school in Weimar from 1848 and then studied law at the University of Leipzig from 1854 to 1858 . In December 1863 he received his doctorate as Dr. jur. From 1864 he worked as a lawyer in Leipzig, later also as a notary. On March 15, 1866, he took over the secretariat of the Chamber of Commerce in Leipzig and then gave up his legal practice. He was chairman of the Association of German Chamber of Commerce Secretaries. In 1900 he finished his work as secretary of the Leipzig Chamber of Commerce.

From January 1866 to December 1872 he was the city councilor of Leipzig. As a representative of the 9th urban constituency ( Döbeln , Leisnig , Waldheim , Mügeln ), he was a member of the Second Chamber of the Saxon Landtag from 1869 to 1877, where he held the office of 2nd Chamber Secretary in 1869/70 and 1875/76 . He was also a consultant on tax reform issues. From January 1877 to July 1878 he represented the constituency of Saxony 15 ( Mittweida ) in the Reichstag in Berlin . From 1888 to around 1902 he was chairman of the National Liberal Association in the Kingdom of Saxony , later its honorary chairman .

Gensel was a member of the Committee of the National Economic Congress (since 1873) and the Association for Social Policy (since 1875). He was also chairman of the non-profit society and the arts and crafts museum in Leipzig, the association for people's welfare in Leipzig as well as the Leipzig branch association and the Saxon regional association of the society for the spread of popular education.

family

Gensel married Ottilie Voigt (1835-1887) on May 25, 1864, a daughter of Robert Schumann's friend Henriette Voigt . He published many of Schumann's letters, which were still in the family's possession at the time, and was friends with Clara Schumann , with whom he also corresponded.
